Its optional in most cases, and the further you get through the lessons, the less you will see "io" and other pronouns. It is more often used when not including it would cause confusion or to emphasize a point. In the examples you gave, there is no real reason to use it in one and not the other.

Kristin is right, it's optional in the majority of cases. They use the basic pronouns of Io, Tu, Lui, Lei, Lei, Noi, Voi, and Loro more in the beginning lessons but the verb conjugations as you will see will gradually take away the need to say or type "io" or "lui", etc. Buona fortuna.
