My experiences were very positive. In Nice, the couple at the next table heard us speaking English so when I made a comment to her in French, she was surprised. We continued our conversation in French, and they ended up taking us on a tour of Nice, including their beautiful home. Take the time to learn some phrases that Fluenz doesn't teach you so you can talk in more detail about your life. Most people who chat you up are interested in how your life at home is like -- and not like -- theirs. If you travel with a tablet or phone, take along some pictures of where you live, your pets, etc.
