But, it isn't the direct object of the second sentence. Probably a bad example, but ...
I said hi to him. He is nice.
You don't say, "Him is nice."
The second sentence is a new sentence.
I said hi to him. He is nice.

I believe its the sentence structure of the first sentence because you have at first... Ich mochte you have a direct subject first. And in the second it is a statement and there is now, you, I, me , they and so on so it is just dieser. I dont know i could be wrong but I hope this helped

They are two separate sentences. Grammar rules (at least in German!) apply to individual sentences. In the second sentence, "dieser" is the subject, referring to "der Schirm," the umbrella.
