I can't speak specifically about Mandarin, I'm studying French. But I can share with you my experiences there. I'm currently near the end of level 3 in Fluenz French. During levels 1 & 2, I spent two days on each lesson, I would go through the complete lesson each day. I would say based on my own experience that one lesson a day is too fast. As in your question, the issue is retention. Some things tend to pop up consistently as you progress through the lessons. But then other things you won't see again for awhile. If I had to do over again, I would say that it would not be unreasonable to spend 3 days on each lesson. When I went to level 3 it was a completely different ball game. The difficulty has gone up, but even more significant there is a lot more material covered in each lesson, the workouts are longer etc. I usually can't even get through an entire lesson in a single day. I'll spend up to a week on a single lesson now. Everyone learns differencly, so ultimately it's up to the individual. But I think I'd say if you think you might be going a little fast, you probably are.
