Tomar is used in Latin America for "to drink". In Spain it is beber. The same is true for a lot of other words. Depending on which Spanish speaking country you are from, you may use a different word. If you think of it in terms of the difference between US and British English it makes sense.

And yet in the Spain version of Spanish, Fluenz uses Tomar and not Beber.

My grandma is from mexíco, (which is why I'm trying to learn), and she told me tomar works fine when talking about "to drink". But "beber" would also work well since it's more specific.
