When the subject is a noun (person or thing) instead of a pronoun, the noun is considered to be in the third person (singular or plural). If you can replace the subject with a third person singular pronoun (he/she/it), the conjugated verb uses third person singular. So, "Herr Doe (er) kommt." If you can replace the subject with the third person plural pronoun (they), the conjugated verb uses third person plural. So, "Herr und Frau Doe (sie) kommen."
