Yes, that's the way I learned in both high school and college. I think of "gehen" as any motion that involves going by foot while "fahren" means more like "traveling" involving a vehicle, either directly or implied.
BTW, watch out for "Fußgänger" in Bavaria and "Fußgeher" in Austria.

Although it can mean "To drive", most of the time "Fahren" is used to say "To go on wheels". So it can be by bus, train, car etc. When you use "to drive" in English, you mean you're the one that's driving the vehicle, whereas in German "Ich fahre" can also just mean "I'm in a car or on a bus or train going somewhere" (not actually driving myself)
