Milestone Achieved
I set out to learn French primarily because I feel it is such a beautiful language. While I would absolutely love to travel to France some day, that is really not possible at anytime in the foreseeable future. However I do take a vacation to Florida every year, so I set myself a sort of milestone goal, something to help me stay motivated. That goal was to visit the French Pavilion at Disneyworld's Epcot and have a conversation with a native French speaker there.
Despite having that goal, a few people who are very familiar with the park told me that it might be difficult because as they said, the people there might not have the time or the patients to speak with a beginning French student. As it turned out, nothing could have been further from the truth.
I had a completely awesome time, like a dream come true. My goal was to have just a single conversation, it turned out that I had many. I found the people there to be so friendly and open to speaking French with me. Most all were very impressed when I told them I had been studying French for almost a year. All encouraged me to keep learning, and were helpful when I didn't understand something. It was just such an awesome experience. I made a point of saying a cheerful "Bonjour!" to everyone that I met and then saying something in French, which turned out to be a great icebreaker.
While I have used a variety of sources for my French education, Fluenz has always been and remains my core. I am nearing the end of level 3 and plan to keep going through level 5. In a finite space, nothing can cover every single topic or nuance of a language, but I have found that Fluenz does such an excellent job of spanning the spectrum of the simple to advanced. To start using Fluenz was one of the best decisions I ever made! :)
