I will offer this, Americans have reduced eating to its bare elements while dining in Italy is an event.

I don't know a soul who puts ketchup on pasta though. That's just gross.

I had heard about throwing pasta against the wall but kind of figured it was a joke, not something anyone actually DID!
I live in a town where, sadly, Olive Garden might be one of the better "italian" places. This is why when I want good Italian food, I just make it myself. Hey, its not that difficult if you have a few high quality ingredients.
As for the coffee culture of Italy, since going to Italy, my husband and I have had to invest in an espresso machine. I do make cappuccino in the morning to have with breakfast. We love this machine, but have nicknamed her 'Principessa" because she is such a princess who needs constant attention. "Si, principessa, subito, principessa!" She does make some fine coffee, though.

i still love some italian-american dishes, like scungilli, chicken scarpiello and chicken francese. i just spent a week at my mom's back in the US and insisted that we either have bracciole with a side of broccoli rabe or scungilli marinara every night for dinner; she just told me she doesn't want to look at either for a very long time!
the ketchup thing reminded me of goodfellas "Can't even get decent food - right after I got here, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce, and I got egg noodles and ketchup."

I do make panforte in December, and biscotti all year long. Oh and Melissa, Braciole on New Years (a compromise for my husband, whose family always had it on Christmas).

Vincenzo - Japanese!! I don't know where you get the time, but I'm impressed. I have the hardest time hearing the phonemes in Asian languages, but maybe Japanese is easier than, say, Vietnamese. Anyway, you are well on your way to being a true polyglot!
