, "estar" is typically used for situations that are temporary. For example, "Hoy ES mi cumpleanos y estoy en el auto".. Ayer FUE mi cumpleanos y estuvo en el carro el dia entera" It is always going to be my birthday, but I won't be in the car forever..hope this helps!

Thanks for the response. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're explaining the difference between Estar and Ser, but Fue is the third-person past tense for Ir. It sounds like the sentence reads, Yesterday went my colleague's birthday.

fue is also 3rd person past tense for ser. iirc ser and ir share the same simple past tense. crazy, how do they do it?

Ah, very interesting. I had no idea and it's not explained in the lesson. Good to know. Thanks, James.

This same construct is used in level 4 and is confusing me. It was a short trip is translated as "fue un viaje corto". Literally, the trip went short. I have not seen any explanation in any of the tutorals. Presumably this construct is used because the trip is not a single event but is an ongoing thing ?

Ser is often used in the sense of "take place" focusing on the action rather than location.
