I am not the expert (level 4 student) but I think context is supposed to supply meaning re: he went on sunday vs it was on sunday.

But to me, "fue" is about "went", and "estuvo" is about "was". These sentences we were given as a match don't seem the same to me UNLESS "It went on Sunday" and "It was on Sunday" are considered to mean the same thing. Maybe I'm being too finicky, but it really hangs me up until I know the reason that these are a match. Hope someone can clarify.

The context does help. Plus ser is used with times, dates, etc. Son las dos (it's 2pm), Fue el domingo (it was on Sunday) Fue en agosto (it was in August). The only way I can think of using estuvo would be "estuvo enfermo" (he was sick) or location - "estuvo en Paris" (he was in Paris)

Wow. Thanks. I think that makes some sense to me...that ser is used for time/dates. The examples you gave were helpful. I think I sort of forgot to think of these in the ser/estar way.
