Demo Portuguese is Disappointing
I have waited so long for Brazilian Portuguese to come out. It almost came out a few years ago, but it had to be pulled for whatever reason. It probably wasn't to Fluenz's high standard. I was okay waiting for Fluenz to get it right. I am Brazilian, but American born and raised in the US. I've been to Brazil many times to visit family, but unfortunately, I don't speak fluently.I've been to the northern and southern parts of Brazil, but mostly to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
I think Sonia does a great job at Fluenz, but I am disappointed for two reasons with the Fluenz Portuguese. First, I was hoping for more than level 2. I was expecting up to level 3. Second, from the first word "bom dia" my heart sank in despair about this being great. After she said, "My Brazilian accent is very good" and that she would be doing a few "levels" before a native Brazilian would be the tutor, I hope she meant a few sessions and not levels. I couldn't listen anymore through the whole introduction because her Brazilian accent was terrible. I was very shocked, because she does speak several languages. I finally did go back and listen to the whole intro. There were several words that she would teach or confuse beginners on how to pronounce the word properly. Example "Não" wasn't too bad, but it should be a deeper nasal sound and the word " A Conta" was completely missing the "a" and in "uma conta" she would pronounce it. Her pronunciation is more like someone who speaks Mandarin learning Portuguese. Somethings she would say okay and others are just not right. Please Sonia. I know you want the best program out there for your customers, but please get a native tutor for all the Portuguese lessons. I want to say that I got to listen to the demo and I didn't buy the Portuguese course. I might buy it anyway and just skip those parts with the tutor and continue from there. Level 1 and 2 are more for review and to pick up anything I might not know. Que pena.
