Hi Ed,
In level 4, session 3 "alcuni" and "alcune" are explained. They can be used as pronouns AND as adjectives. Actually, in session 3 they appear as adjectives ("Ho alcune riunioni") and from that session on you are allowed to use qualche or alcuni/e in the workouts. The only thing you have to remember is that when qualche is used the noun following it must be in the singular form, while nouns following alcuni/e must be in the plural.
