Tanto and Molto are interchangeable most of the times. Using one or the other sometimes depends on the emphasis you want to express, "tanto" being more emphatic. Here is a very good explanation in English with many examples: http://blogs.transparent.com/italian/...
Both are equally used, but in certain areas like Tuscany you might hear "tanto" more than "molto". Molto can be a bit more "formal", but you'll be fine with any of them.
