Bob, I can understand the confusion. In your example of "Yo se quien es," I think there's a subtle distinction at work here. The way I look at it is like this: "saber" means to have knowledge of something, whereas "conocer" means to be acquainted with. In your example, what you're saying is that you have knowledge of who this person is -- you're not saying that you are acquainted with him. For example, it's correct to say that I have knowledge of who Mick Jagger is, but I'm not acquainted with him. "Yo se quien es Mick Jagger, pero yo no lo conozco." Hope this helps to clarify.
