It's because the word "despues" is always followed by "de." And when that's followed by a masculine article, such as "el," it becomes "del." If it were followed by a feminine article, it would become "de la." It's the same with "antes" -- such as when you'd say "La tienda esta antes de la oficina." You can't translate it directly into English. It's just the way it is in Spanish.
