I asked this very question of an Inn Keeper in Austria. She didn't seem to think there was much of a difference and had the look of "gee, I never thought of that". At least for 'zahlen' und 'bezahlen', from my experience, there doesn't appear to be a difference that matters in conversation. Perhaps it's like "flammable" and "inflammable".

I thought of this long and hard as well. Not even the official German dictionary (Duden) states any clear-cut difference.
You may often use "zahlen" instead of "bezahlen" in spoken German, but in some cases you can only use bezahlen, that's why we preferred to teach you "bezahlen" in the Fluenz program.
Don't worry about it too much!
Happy new year all!
