Donna this is an excellent question that I've had as well. My understanding has always been that the definite pronoun was almost always used, but I've noticed in Fluenz that it is not always the case.

I wish someone could shine some light on this. I guess to be on the safe side (outside of the Fluenz world), it's best to use the definite article rather than omit it.

Hi - Sometimes you can use the article or not, and that's one of these cases. It's the same with "Parlo italiano or Parlo l'italiano", you'll hear it both ways. With "piace" you always use the article, but with "bere", you can use it or not. So you can say: "mi piace il caffè, ma preferisco bere latte/il latte", but you can't say "mi piace caffè".
The use of the article is probably more frequent, but it's not wrong if you don't say it. Hope this helps!
