Have you tried turning off challenge mode? To type the accents, hold the [ key and then the letter; to make the tilde N, hold ; and it will appear. Last, for the first question mark, press 1, then shift + question mark, same process for upside down exclaimation mark. Hope that helps!

If what you want to do is to learn to speak a language (as opposed to writing it), turn off the challenge mode. This will make accent marks unnecessary. I've mentioned this to Fluenz before: when you start up the program for the first time, it defaults to challenge mode on, which is very confusing to new users who don't care to use accent marks -- which, I believe, is the majority of users.

I have had the same thing happen to me with a few words, but so far it seems rare. I had to accent the letter N in order to proceed. Still, I love the program!

The mark over the N isn't considered an accent because ñ is considered a separate letter of the alphabet, apart from the traditional N. If you use an N where an ñ is called for, the program will always flag it as a mistake because it's a misspelled word, not a mis-accented word. And since it's a misspelling, it would get flagged whether or not you're in challenge mode.

At the top of the screen it says Challenge Mode. If you turn that off you don't need to put accent marks. If you are in challenge mode, hit the key just to the right of L to get the special n. And hit the key just to the right of P just before you type the accented vowel and it will do that for you.
