I had the same question in Lesson 2 of Level 5 and yeah I just assumed it was feminine because 'La' was letting you know it was referring the a feminine noun.

I was just about to post the same exact question as Sylvia. I have never heard of nouns changing gender except where it is a question of the actual sex of the noun.... like el niño vs. la niña.... but here the noun's ending changes as well. There are some nouns which change the article from el to la without the noun changing, but then the actual meaning of the word completely changes. (Can't think of one just now) I need to have a definitive ruling on this from the officials in the front office.

I have come across some gender switcheroos also. The DVDs teach el bolso and el internet, but the podcasts teach la bolsa and la internet.
