I don't ever remember being penalized for punctuation in the lessons…could it have been something else?

Thanks for your comments. I don't think the system was penalizing anything else because as soon as I changed the period to a colon, it was accepted and the exercise was over. Hopefully it was just a fluke with that one sentence. You are right that they are usually fairly flexible and I have not encountered this before. I was afraid it was because I was getting into more complicated structures in Level 4.

I have noticed two things - the program doesn't care at all about punctuation, but it does care about spaces. It could be that when you changed the colon to a period, you removed and extra space.

I have to agree with travelingnana. I remember this sentence for the very same reason. The colon is necessary in order for the answer to be accepted. I was also surprised, but managed to remember to put it in during subsequent attempts. P.S. the sentence is in Level 4, session 11, and also in Italian Flashcards, level 4, session 11. The colon is required in both places.
