I think the difference here is between the action of going (movement) to open an account, vs the purpose of opening an account.

It seemed to me that all the movement of the sentence was expressed by "Fui al banco" (I went to the bank) The second clause expresses why I went there, for what purpose, to what end...... to open an account. Seems to me to be a clear-cut case for "para abrir una cuenta" Sonia, ayudanos, por favor.
