In Argentina, a blanket is called a manta. So no, if you have the Latin American version of the program, you should be learning Latin American Spanish. There are always regional words that are used to describe objects, i.e. in Argentina, "muchilla" is used to say bag, not "bolso". But bolso is still understood, people just think it sounds "very Spanish". Thing is, I hear bolso in Mexican telenovelas. So I think a lot of locals who don't travel attribute any word they personally don't use often to being from Spain. Just my thoughts...

Cubrir is to cover. Cubrir con una manta: cover with a blanket. Maybe they said "cobertor" ? That's another word for blanket.
