Jason, I think you do have it!! If you think of the above sentence as a algebraic equation, then "al estadio" would have a parenthesis around it like this: "Fuimos (al estadio) a comprar unas entradas. You could remove that entity, (al estadio), and it wouldn't change the sentence in terms of subject-verb-object. Fuimos cares about "a comprar", but could take or leave the "al estadio".... if you catch my drift. So, we are going to buy passes is the real meat of the sentence, and it's the (fuimos-a+ infinitive) which, as you say, is the necessary structure here. Hope my mathmatical musings haven't muddied the meaning!!!
