Vorrei works well, and it will be taught soon enough (not sure what level you are on). It is more polite, as is "Desidero".
Of course adding "per favore" and a smile goes a long way too. :-)

I live in Italy and I ALWAYS use "vorrei," when it comes to asking for something. Here is an example of how I would use both of them:
VORREI: "Vorrei un caffè, per favore." --- I would like a coffee, please.
VOGLIO: "Voglio andare a Venezia." --- I want to go to Venice.
Remember that "vorrei" is "I would like," and "voglio" is "I want." Just think of how you would use each if you were speaking English. I hope this helps!

I had glanced at Level 3 flash cards and noticed they used vorrei so it is introduced at some point. I just finished Level 1 and it wasn't touched upon there so not sure if it comes in Level 2 or not until 3.
