Hi rshores
Don't worry! It's you and every German learner that struggles with word order. So the most basic rule for German word order is:
Subject - Verb - Time - Manner – Place (+ infinitive/ past participle)
So we are asking:
Who - Doing what - When - How - Where
Er geht am Sonntag mit seiner Freundin ins Kino
We introduce more aspects of word order gradually throughout the program so you can find reminders throughout. For example in sessions 10, 12 and 17 of level 2 or in podcast 3 of level 1. But the most important rule to always fall back on is:
Subject – Verb – Time – Place – Manner + infinitive/ past participle
You can find a really interesting conversation about this on Commons here:
http://fluenz.com/commons/german/post...
Note that in this thread our Manner complement is separated into Kausal and Modal.
If you want to read more, then I found this: http://german.about.com/library/weekl...
and with some games to practise: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/german/hmr/g...
I hope this helps!
