My understanding is that as direct object pronouns, "lo" and "la" can be used to refer to "him" or "her" or "it" and also "you", singular, but for "you" it is for the formal "you." (i.e. someone you would refer to as usted). If the "you" is someone you would use "tu" with, then the object pronoun is "te".
