DELF A1 Exam
A couple of months ago now, I took the French A1 DELF exam. A few days ago I finally received my results and I passed :) I actually did significantly better than I thought I had. The series of DELF exams are based around a common European language proficiency standard. So while DELF is the French version, other languages also have their own exams but at each level they measure the similar standards.
The exams are broken into four sections, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The speaking part is like a panel interview, completely in French. I was asked to introduce myself, talk about my family, my interests, etc There were also some dialog role plays, real world type interactions. It was difficult and stressful, but I also had fun and enjoyed the experience. The listening, reading, and writing parts were all done in standard test style, I recorded my answers in a written booklet. For the listening section, they played several short recordings and then I was required to answer several questions. The writing part including writing an email on the scenario provided and had to be a certain number of words long.
There is absolutely no question that for me Fluenz French built the foundation for me to both learn the language, as well as giving me the passion to continue learning. Before I ever seriously started to learn French, I looked at everything available. After that investigation, I felt Fluenz was the best and after using the software I still feel that way.
Three months after I began using Fluenz French I started taking classes at Alliance Française. Up through, I'd say around the first four classes I took at AF, I had already learned most of the material through Fluenz French level 3. The most important part of my AF classes was, and continues to be, the ability to practice my French interacting with others in real time. In addition, I have some French pen pals that I exchange with on a daily basis. They of course are not following any curriculum, so I am exposed to language structures I know as well as a lot of advanced concepts.
Language learning can be different for everyone depending on their individual goals. Someone might choose to learn a language because they are planning a vacation, to pass an exam, or like me doing it as a life long learning activity. For anyone I would highly recommend Fluenz as the best launch pad to begin that journey, by itself provides an excellent education and the ability to learn a language.
