Like many words, their use varies by region, but I'd say they're both right. I interpret "cuarto" as a room in general, but "habitación" as a living space, like a bedroom or a hotel suite. For the purpose of, say, renting a hotel room, either should be fine.

thank you Ron. We have quite a few differences in words that he learned from his parents who were native speakers but in California. He says carro instead of auto and pronounces Yo with a y not a J sound but at least we have some lively discussions.
