hi I used books from Penguin publishing, they have dual books (one side english one side german) :)

You should also be able to find "easy reader" books for most popular languages. Like the Penguin books silvusaak mentioned, they're written in parallel English & German. Since they're meant for beginning students, the language starts simple and builds up, and many books will footnote new words as they occur so you don't need to flip back and forth as much.

I am in Germany now so I am not sure how available these are in the US, but the best easy readers are from Hueber in my opinion. They are called: Leichte Literatur (Deutsch als Fremdsprache). They are only in German, but they use the same words over and over so you can get away from the direct translation.
