It looks to me like you figured it out. If they had meant "Yes, I was able to prepare a fruit pie" (i.e., I had enough time and materials, etc.) then the past or imperfect would work. The context is important, looking specifically for "if" I think is a distraction. What was here meant was "Yes I can possibly prepare..." These distinctions are always hard. How about two words for "to know" in French, only one in English? I get that one wrong sometimes. In Spanish, there are two verbs "to be." That's a pain...
