The clue here is the fact that "could" is in (). If it weren't, your translation would be correct. In fact, it is anyway, but the () is just Fluenz's way of steering you to the response they want. We learned (somewhere) that in French often the simple present or passe compose are used to imply ability. For example, "je ne vous vois pas" can mean either "I don't see you" or, implied, "I can't see you." In your example, the French is saying literally "we didn't find the boarding gate" but implying that "we couldn't find the boarding gate."

I must have missed the part where simple present or passe compose can imply ability (I didn't start until the middle of level 2, so it might have happened before that. Thanks for the tip.
