The Fluenz podcast mentioned in the link Fabrice posted is from Level 2, podcast 5. They spend the entire podcast talking about "y" and "en". Sonia mentions that the placement is before the verb, or between the conjugated verb and the infinitive. In the case of passé composé, it goes in front of avoir/être and the past participle (eg. J'y suis allé) since avoir/être are considered part of the verb conjugation.
