Hi- The word Kollege is what is known as a N noun- that means in every case except nominative the noun adds the letter N- so des Kollegen is the gen singular. Hope this helps.

Thanks chrishvn. I think I get it. You can tell the difference between singular and plural, and possessive and non-possessive, by context and the article, right? Also, thanks for the compliment above. I would love to become a superb German speaker.
