Después de is a prepositional phrase that means 'after something'. See the attached link for a complete explanation of después.

If you use only the word después then you are indicating 'later', rather than 'after something'.
There are other similar prepositional phrases - antes de (before something), al lado de (beside something). All of these phrases need to convert from de to del whenever followed by a masculine noun. You will see many of them as you progress.
