Ross, I spend the better part of my work day, speaking Spanish, but I am not a native speaker. My experience is that most Spanish speakers will be very happy that you made the effort to speak their language. They are very tolerant of mistakes. Try "mariscos" for seafood. Pollo is for chicken, but chicken breast may appear on the menu as "pechuga de pollo" or just "pechuga."

Bksatty9, thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated!
The salmon/chicken thing never happened. It was a joke. LOL! Thanks just the same!

I've been a part-time volunteer interpreter at the local county health department clinic for 15 years now and I can assure you that everyone I assist is grateful for having someone to pass information back and forth between patient and doctor/nurse. It is also an opportunity to help patients with their English. I also lead a Conversation Cafe each Saturday at the local county library. You have to step out of your comfort zone to acquire opportunities to communicate in another language. And I agree with what you are doing. The only time it would constantly backfire was when I tried to use German in Germany, since they would normally reply in very good English.

I learned Spanish in school, but in my own experiences I have found that native speakers love it when people try and talk spanish with them. Also keep in mind, if they speak English, they went through the same thing we have learning a foreign language and 9 times out of 10 more than willing to have a conversation with you. :)
