I love "eso" and "esto" ! Those saved me many times. "ese" and "esa" are for masculine and femine, so what if you don't know if something is masculine or feminine? Use "eso/esto"! Imagine you want to order a dish at a restaurant, you look at a picture but you have no idea of its gender, use "esto"!:
I want this (thing): Quiero esto.
I want that (thing): Quiero eso.
You point at the thing, and you use "eso" or "esto".
I want this (thing): Quiero esto.
I want that (thing): Quiero eso.
