Hello liegebeest. My understanding of this is that because grande is an adjective that ends in an 'e' in the singular form, then to make it plural you have to change the 'e' to an 'i.' I think the rule is this;-for nouns and adjectives that end in an 'o' in the singular, the ending changes to an 'i' in the plural. For nouns and adjectives that end in an 'a' in the singular, the ending becomes an 'e' in the plural. For nouns and adjectives that end in an 'e' in the singular, the ending becomes 'i' in the plural. In your example above, 'valigie' is the plural of 'valigia', 'grandi' is the plural of 'grande'. Some other examples:- libro grande/libri grandi, penna grande/penne grandi, stazione grande/stazioni grandi. I hope this makes sense!

The general rule is: Adjectives that end in "e" are gender neutral. So, there is only one plural form.
Grande, felice, difficile, facile, importante, triste, etc., just to name a few.
