There are two possible meaning of the English sentence. If you mean "we were able to go to the beach" then you would use the passe compose "avons pu." I always think of pouvoir as meaning to be able to, it helps with this confusing point. If you mean "we might possibly go to the beach", i.e., we "could" but it is only one possible choice, then you would use pourions. The latter is the conditional tense, which is not taught formerly by Fluenz, but we do learn the conditional of pouvoir and vouloir because they are so useful and commonly encountered.
