"ir" means "to go". You would use "ir a" when you are saying "to go to". Such as, "I am going TO GO TO the store", "Voy A IR A la tienda." "Voy a"="I am going to", "ir a la tienda"= "go to the store." Hope this helps!

"a" is also used after forms of 'ir" when linking to a verb infinitive. For example, "I am going to eat" is "Voy a comer." This is true of a few other verbs, but not most, so for example "I want to eat" is just "Quiero comer."
