yě is used to describe two or more things in common in the sentence: I was eating and also was chatting with my friend. You would use yě. Hái can mean "also" when it's adding to something. For example I want a coffee and also I want a tea. You're adding, so hái is appropriate. Hái otherwise means "still" (It's late and he still has not arrived).

i wondered the same but am still not comfy w/ it. in your last statement "it's late & he still hasn't arrived"-would it be (& I've never done any writing so idk how to even add tones) "shi wan, ye ta hai mei dao le" ??? or leave out the ye in b/n? and what about hte "shi"? needed? and I'm not even sure about using "mei" there. so much learning is assumed I'm never confident.
