Check this: http://resources.allsetlearning.com/c... and look at the video that is linked there for the use of hen in chinese. If you want to say very, you can emphasize the 3rd tone of hen.

Yes that's the one. It basically tells you that in this case you use "hen" as a filler. In english you use "is" for linking a noun to a adjective, for example "He is good". But in chinese you cannot use "shi". Instead you use "hen". It's confusing at the beginning because as you said it sounds like we're going to say "very" all the time. But "hen" between a noun and an adjective will be understood as a "link", not as "very", unless you emphasize it. You cannot say "wo shi hao" and to the chinese ear, "wo hao" doesn't sound good. You would be understood but something is missing.
