I think I recall a rule of thumb with "me/lete/les gusta" that you follow with el/la/los/las before the noun. I have noted this in Lesson 3:19, so you might check back to that lesson and see if you can find it. I think that in your first example, "la comida" is expressed as the subject of a sentence. The sentence would be interpreted as "The food is pleasing to me". In your second example, I see "comida" being used as a direct object. Interpreting this one, I think it would be "I don't want to eat very sweet food". If I am correct, perhaps this is the difference. Again, try 3.19.
