Press Shift+6 to make the ^ then let go of the keys, then press the letter a. That should do the trick. Alternatively, you could use online.fluenz.com - there is a pop-out keyboard in the writing sections that you use your mouse to click and make the accents.

thank you, I will try to find the pop out keyboard. I've been using the online Fluenz but didn't notice a keyboard. I'd tried the shift + 6 then letter and all I get is the ^ then the letter after.

When I first started using Fluenz French I used the Fluenz shortcuts and that worked well within the application. However a few months later, I had several French penpals, and of course the Fluenz shortcuts didn't work for my email client which put me into a bit of a bind. It took me awhile to figure out something that would work. Finally someone here at Fluenz commons suggested using the "US International Keyboard" A quick Google search provided me with the simple instructions and about 5 minutes later I was in business and I've never looked back, it works perfectly. At the time that was on a PC. A couple of months ago I bought a Macbook Pro, which also supports the US International Keyboard. Naturally I installed and it works exactly that same as it does on my PC. I also have an iPhone, an iPad, and an Android tablet. Yes I know, I do have a lot of toys :) For these it was also very simple, just a matter of adding French as a language in addition to English, then I was able to easily switch between English and French keyboards.
You are absolutely right, it's vital to use the accents right from the beginning. And I have to assume that if you are using Fluenz French your intentions are to use French in the long term. I highly recommend using the international keyboards, it will make everything all around easier. This also works equally well with other languages.
