If it's something that you want to do, I would say that is justification enough. In the act of learning a new language, you invest in yourself, expand your horizons by exposing yourself to other world cultures, you exercise your brain especially your memory, not a bad thing at all. Learning a new language is probably the most difficult thing I have done. The sense of satisfaction that comes with finding success is something challenging is not a bad thing either. And don't sell yourself short about using your new language skills. When I first started learning French, I found a few pen pals who live in France. Three years later all have become my dear friends. Many times I have found myself looking at a long email that I just wrote in a language that just a short time ago I barely knew a word of. For me that is one of the coolest things. Life is all about learning and experiencing new things, I say go for it!
