To be honest, I would have used "en el hotel," which means "in" or "at" the hotel. "Al" hotel means, to my way of thinking, "to the hotel," which seems inappropriate in this scenario.

"Ir en el hotel" denotes that you're going to go inside the hotel, for example: "Necesitamos ir en el hotel para registrarse". "Ir a" only indicates movement, so "Ir al hotel" means that you're going to go to the building, but doesn't say where inside the building.
