In general, being colleagues is not a variable state at the time you mention the fact, so you use SER. It's like "amigos", you would use "ser" for amigos even though one day you may not be friends anymore.

Hi ojosdeverdes, we always use "Ser" for relationships: "Somos colegas", "Él es mi esposo", "Ellos son mis padres"...
