I have a similar problem on my Mac running OSX El Capitan. There is no white area in which to type answers. I don't have this problem on my iPad. Does anyone know if this is happening on Windows and Mac or just Mac?

Tina, Some of the flashcards are writing and some are sound only if you chose the mix. There is a special option to do the writing only if you prefer.
