One is a direct object pronoun (los or las); the other is an indirect object pronoun (les).

We visited them (direct object) yesterday and we brought them (indirect object) a chocolate cake (direct object). The first "them" is a direct object (los); the second "them" is an indirect object (les).

It might be helpful to simply think: We visited them (which clearly has only ONE object) and we gave them it (making IT the direct object and THEM the entity receiving that object).
