Unfortunately yes, the order of objects is quite strict in German, and since a change in the order of words may cause a change in the meaning of the sentence, it has to be respected even in general use.
So, when you have both a direct and an indirect object pronoun, the indirect pronoun has to go before the direct one, for example you'd say:
Sie haben ihr das am Dienstag im Hotel gegeben / They gave it to her on Tuesday at the hotel
We work a lot on this issue in level 4 session 7, where we give an exhaustive presentation on word order in the German sentence, so if it is still a bit unclear, you might want to go back to this session and practice with the workouts again.
Word order in German is one of the most complex issues, so don't worry if you don't get it right all the time, people will understand you, and if you keep at it, you'll see it will become more and more natural with practice.
